In Spiritual Direction Session the Spiritual Director tries to help the Spiritual Directee pay attention to the primary conversation. This being of course the directee's relationship/prayer life with God.
1. Spiritual Direction is Not Apostolic Service Reporting.
It is important to focus on your spiritual life with your spiritual directee and not the problems and joys of ministries. Issues with your job, ministry, etc. can be brought up but they should not be the content of your spiritual direction session.
2. Spiritual Direction is Not a Boss Employee Relationship
The Spiritual Director is more of a coach than a boss. It is not his or her job to assign punishment for the directee not following through with suggested work.
3. Spiritual Direction is Not a Class on prayer
While a directee may learn more about different styles of prayer in spiritual direction he or she will be talking about his or her prayer life and not different methods of prayer.
4. Spiritual Direction is Not a "Jesus and Me" thing
While working in Spiritual Direction it will require from time to time for the directee to speak about his relationships with others. This is after all the second part of the greatest commandment.
5. Spiritual Direction is Not a "Mutual Appreciation Society"
When working with a spiritual director we know that God will ask a spiritual directee to face his or her sinful side and thus there will be times in which a spiritual director must challenge the directee.
6. Spiritual Direction is Not a Pastoral Counseling Session
Spiritual Direction is more interested in learning more about what God wants the directee to do about situations than with solving the situation. Sometimes professional couseling is needed for human formation issues.
7. Spiritual Direction is Not a Prayer verses Activity thing
Spiritual Direction judges one's relationship with God not only by looking at one's prayer's life but by also looking at the directees behaviors.
8. Spiritual Direction is Not the Sacrament of Reconciliation
Spiritual Direction is not the same as the Sacrament of Recocniliation. Spiritual Direction focuses on more than our sins.
9. Spiritual Direction is Not a Catholic Self-Help program
Spiritual Direction is about allowing God's grace to work in us. We can never acheive things in the spiritual life on our own.
10. Spiritual Direction is Not a Spiritual Friendship Program
It is important for the Spiritual Director to keep his or her focus on the spiritual life of the Directee so that sessions don't become two people sitting around and talking about God.
11. Spiritual Direction is Not a Story Matching Club
It is important that the prayer life of the directee remain front and center so that sessions do not become a contest in which both people try to do each other with stories of different experiences.
